Dark Moody, High Art
By Jordan OseiI’ve been on the internet long enough to know that when something gets described as “dark” and “moody,” it usually means it’s either a) a 17-year-old boy’s attempt at expressing existential dread, or b) a marketing team trying to make their product seem edgy.
But occasionally, you stumble upon something that actually is dark, moody, and high art. And MCMXXVI—a project from Atlanta’s JRich Ent—falls squarely into the latter category.
At its core, MCMXXVI is a storytelling project inspired by the legacy of the Safe Bus Company, the first Black-owned busing company founded in 1926. Located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, operating from 1926 to 1972, during a time when access to opportunity was limited, Safe Bus represented Black ownership, resilience, and the power of building your own table when a seat wasn’t offered.
JRich Ent—a Music and Culture business consisting of hip-hop artist JRich, professional manager JRich, and music engineer JRich—is collaborating with designer Jordan Daniels to create new merch, music, and experiences on their project MCMXXVI (1926). And while the story itself is rich and compelling, it’s the way MCMXXVI tells that story that sets it apart.
The project doesn’t just stop at music and fashion—it transforms history into a full experience that goes beyond those mediums. It’s an immersive journey that takes you through the highs and lows of the Safe Bus Company, with each element expertly crafted to transport you back to 1926 Winston-Salem.
And when I say “expertly crafted,” I mean it. Every aspect of MCMXXVI has been meticulously curated to create a world that feels real, raw, and powerful. From the music to the merch to the overall experience, nothing is left to chance. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration—when you put together a group of talented individuals who share a vision and work towards it with passion and dedication, magic happens.
But here’s the thing: MCMXXVI isn’t just about the Safe Bus Company or the legacy it left behind. It’s about something much bigger—it’s about resilience, ownership, and the power of building your own table when a seat wasn’t offered. It’s a reminder that we all have the power to create our own opportunities, to build our own worlds, and to tell our own stories.
So, the next time you hear someone describe something as “dark” and “moody,” take a closer look. Because sometimes, those two words are just the beginning of a journey into high art.
